Glamorous Anna

We shot the wedding on Saturday, so now I can finally share some of Anna’s bridal portraits!  She said she wanted glamour.  She wasn’t kidding!  She used to be a model and was fearless in her wedding gown.  Didn’t mind twigs, dirt, anything really, getting on it.   She almost walked through water once, and she didn’t care.  A golden retriever ran up to her and nearly jumped on her – she didn’t flinch.  I, on the other hand was flinching the whole time.  Thanks for being fearless and glamorous, Anna!

Goodbye Winter.

Today is the first day of Spring – THANK GOODNESS, right?  Like most everyone else I had a heavy dose of winter this year.  Traveling deep into the Rocky Mountains followed immediately by a quick trip to the ice cap that is Chicago, Illinois made me 100% ready for winter to be over!  I will have to say thought, that I enjoyed by winter trips immensely.  When I finally arrived in Aspen, Colorado after 7 hours on a bus (FROM DENVER, normally a 3 hour trip), I realized that I had forgot my Holga camera.  Which was a small little tragedy for me.  But with the help of Amazon Prime, I was able to get a new one within a few days.  Overnight delivery turned into a few days.  But given that we were sitting in the middle of the worst (best?) snowstorm in 30 years, I wasn’t complaining.  Fun fact: we got 24 inches in 24 hours.  It was AMAZING.

I was a little unsure about shooting with the new camera without being able to do a test roll to see how the light leaks were on this particular one.  But I decided I didn’t have a choice and went ahead and shot with it anyway.  For those of you who are familiar with Holga cameras, you’ll know what I mean.  For those who are not familiar, I’ll just say you’re about to see a few b/w photos shot with a plastic camera.

Everyday was basically a blizzard so I have some very cold & snowy photos.  The camera is actually pretty tight, so I will be fussing with it to make it a bit less predictable.

And now, it’s Friday and 80 degrees in Austin, Texas and I’m not working this weekend.  SO, TGIF I say!  TGIF.

It’s Monday, let’s celebrate!

I know,  usually a “Woo Hoo!!” photograph usually comes at the end of the week.  Will enthusiastic quips about TGIF, happy hour, and the excellent plans for the weekend.  But I’ve decide to put my faith in the Universe and send all good vibes out today.  On Monday.  I am going to have great week, you guys!  I am insisting you have one too, give it a shot.  What do you have to lose by exercising a little more positivity than normal at the beginning of the week, rather than the end?

This photo was taken at our wedding in January.  The parents surprised everyone (including the bride and groom) with fireworks right after the ceremony.  Look at the smile on the bride’s face!  I just love it.

Have an excellent week.  I mean it!

PS – Great job pulling off the surprise, Caplan Miller Events!

Elegant Spring wedding in Houston, Texas

Spring is right around the corner!  Here is a gorgeous affair we shot in Houston last Spring for a little inspiration.  Below the photos is a write up from Jennie at Keely Thorne Events with more details about the wedding.

From Jennie at Keely Thorne Events:

One of the best parts of my job is working with clients who have specific ideas for their wedding, but developing the details and connecting them into an event that flows beautifully!  Elena was one such bride, who planned the wedding from her current home of New York City with the help of her mother in her hometown of Houston.  The wedding day festivities started out with the ceremony at historic Christ Church Cathedral, where the bride’s parents were married years before.  The Bayou Club provided a picturesque backdrop for the spring dinner party that Elena had envisioned from the start.  The natural, almost overgrown garlands and arrangements created by John Friedman were a perfect complement to the club, which is tucked among century-old trees behind one of Houston’s largest parks.  Guests were greeted by a classic string quartet with a contemporary twist – think Bach and Handel meets Adele and the Rolling Stones.  Since the weather was uncharacteristically chilly for late April in Texas, we sourced pashminas in the wedding’s color palette of gold, coral, and Turkish blue.  These were waiting on each female guest’s seat for dinner.  Special attention was paid to the paper details of the reception, with hand calligraphy and a custom-designed monogram.  The bride, groom and their families worked together closely to fashion a delicious seated dinner menu for their guests to enjoy.  Once the cake had been cut and locally-made ice cream was passed, things loosened up a bit as their uber-energetic 80’s cover band took the stage complete in “Revenge of the Nerds” attire.  Guests were invited to accessorize with neon Wayfarers and bracelets as they celebrated until midnight (which unfortunately was “closing time” despite numerous requests for an encore – I think they would have danced until dawn if we let them!).  Elena and Joe departed from the reception in a snow-like flurry of white confetti and fragrant lavender buds, while guests were sent home with their pockets and purses full of what are arguably the state’s most delicious pecan pralines.

Wedding in Far West Texas, Part 2

And now we continue the second portion of Shelby and Brooks’ wedding in Marathon, Texas.  After the ceremony on the family ranch, we hopped in a truck with the bride and groom and raced around the ranch chasing the quickly setting sun.  Afterwards, we returned the The Gardens at The Gage Hotel for the reception.  It was a truly fun day and shooting with the West Texas sky as a backdrop is simply exhilarating.

Shelby’s sister was not only the Maid of Honor, but she also write a song for Shelby and Brooks, which she performed at the recepetion.  I believe this was the first time she snag and played the guitar solo in front of a crowd.  She did an excellent job!

Wedding in Far West Texas, Part 1

I love love love weddings in West Texas.  Particularly at The Gage in Marathon.  This hotel is set up to handle all of your wedding needs and it is beautiful!  If you’re thinking of having a destination wedding, consider Far West Texas, you and your guests will not be disappointed!  It’s the home of Marathon, Alpine, and the increasingly popular Marfa, Texas.   It’s also home to Big Bend National Park and the Davis Mountains.  As well as the McDonald Observatory.  OH!  And don’t forget about the mysterious Marfa Lights.   As the name indicates, it’s FAR.  Far from anything.  Midland, Texas is 3 hours away, as is El Paso.  The ultimate Texas road trip, if you will.
Growing up, I spent a lot of time in West Texas – my family is from there.  So at an early age I was spellbound by that area of Texas’ insanely beautiful and dramatic sunsets.  So any chance I get to shoot out there, I take it.  Shelby and Brooks were married in Marathon at the groom’s family ranch.  It was stunning and I would go on and on.  But I’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves!  Happily, I was able to shoot some with my Holga camera.  Which, I also love love love.

A west Texas wedding ceremony wouldn’t be complete without something creepy-crawly in attendance.  For the record, there were two tarantulas!

Far West Texas, Part 2 coming soon!
